“The art of life lies in a constant readjustment to our surroundings.”
—Kakuzō Okakura, The Book of Tea
Over the past several months, we have all had to adjust our lives due to the Coronavirus. And across the world, people have demonstrated extraordinary bravery, creativity, and humanity as they work together to fight COVID-19.
WIA mourns with those who mourn and extend our hope for healing and health for those still suffering from the effects of this illness. We are immensely grateful to the essential employees who are on the frontlines every day, going above and beyond to take care of their communities. And we are thankful for our own WIA community and hope you are all safe and well.
It is in the interest of our WIA community’s safety and well-being that we have made the very difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Women in Analytics Conference, which we had previously postponed until August. The CDC has advised that “COVID-19 cases and deaths have been reported in all 50 states, and the situation is constantly changing.
Because travel increases your chances of getting infected and spreading COVID-19, staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others from getting sick.” In light of this CDC advisory, we feel that holding the event in August would be too soon for us to be confident about the safety of our speakers, sponsors, and attendees, who would have been flying in from all over the world.
Despite the decision to postpone our in-person event, I want to assure you that WIA remains committed to our mission of providing visibility to the women making an impact in the analytics space. We are grateful to have continued support from the nearly 10,000 members of the WIA Community around the globe—via LinkedIn, Slack, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and our soon-to-launch Membership Platform.
For the remainder of the year, we are refocusing our efforts toward initiatives that encourage the growth, engagement, and development of our community and its members safely.
To Our Community
We would like to extend a big THANK YOU to our incredible community. You are what ignites our passion to produce our annual conference, and in our commitment to serving you, will be offering the 2020 conference workshops virtually in mid-August of this year. Tickets are on sale and we will be reaching out to workshop ticket holders with additional details. We have also put together a summer of free virtual events hosting women-led conversations around the advancements of analytical research, development, and applications.
Here at headquarters, we are feeling the effects of this shutdown. Although our event has been canceled, the hard work of our staff, operating costs, and continued expenses have not. We need your support now more than ever, so we’ve put together a few ways you can help us continue to do what we do best:
Option 1: Your ticket and seat will be the same for the late-August/early-September 2021 Conference. If you purchased a workshop ticket, it will be applied to the virtual workshops hosted in August 2020. Once we finalize the dates, we will send instructions to transfer your conference ticket over to that event on Eventbrite.
Option 2: If you are unable to attend the rescheduled date in 2021 (coming soon), you can request a refund. Please see the instructions to request a refund here. If you are able to donate to WIA, please consider doing so here by clicking register and scrolling to the bottom! We appreciate your patience and understanding while we process refunds.
Your support means the world to us and will help us navigate this challenging time. We look forward to being able to gather in-person again, but until then, stay safe and stay healthy.
Can’t wait to see you soon,
Founder & President – Women in Analytics
